History identifies Kannur as Naura, from the shores of which King Solomon’s ships collected timber to build the great temple of Jerusalem. The abode of Theyyam, the oldest ritualistic art from Kerala. This region has some of Kerala’s most inspiring tourist spots including Muzhappilangad in Thalassery, the only drive-in-beach in the state.

   
PLACES OF ATTRACTION: 

Payyambalam Beach: 2kms from Kannur, Payyambalam, the long, lovely beach is a local picnic spot. Flat laterite cliffs jut into the sea at one end. Picturesque and incredibly beautiful, the beach is only walking distance from Fort St. Angelo. It is an ideal place to spend evenings, irrespective of seasons, because of its quiet and calm environment.

Arakkal Kettu (3 km from Kannur): This was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim Royal Family of Kerala.

St. Angelo Fort (3 km from Kannur): This seafront Laterite Fort was constructed in 1505 AD by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeda with the consent of the ruling Kolathiri Raja. After changing hands from the Portuguese to the Dutch and then to the English, the fort became one of the important military centres of the British in Malabar. The fort, which is now under the Archaeological Survey of India, offers fascinating views of the Mappila bay fishing harbour.

Valapattanam (7 km from Kannur) : The small town on the Valapattanam river is well known for its wood based industries and timber trade. The port of Azhikkal and Azhikkal Beach are located nearby. Western India Plywoods Limited, the largest wood based industry in the country and also one of the largest of its kind in South East Asia, is a major industrial concern here.

Kizhunna Beach: 11 Kms from Kannur, This beautiful stretch of sand is one of the most secluded beaches in Kerala. 

Meenkunnu Beach (12 km from Kannur) : Uncrowded, the beach is a tourists' paradise, with golden sand and surf.
Parassinikadavu (16 km from Kannur town) Sri Muthappan Temple stands on the banks of the Valapattanam river. This pilgrim centre is famous for the Muthappan Theyyam performed every morning and evening. The DTPC provides pleasure boating on the river near the temple. Accommodation is available nearby.
Muzhapilangad Beach (15 km from Kannur and 8 km from Thalasseri) : Black rocks protect this long, clean beach from the currents of the deep, making its shallow waters a swimmer's paradise. Perhaps this is Kerala's only drive-in beach where you can drive down the entire length of 4 km.

Dharmadom Island :About 3 kms from Thalassery lays the small island of 'Dharmadam'. This tiny 5-acre island is covered with coconut palms and green bushes, which is a beautiful sight from the beach. A bus ride from Thalassery will take one to the place of destination but permission is required to enter this privately owned island. This place was earlier known as Dharmattanam, getting its name from the popular belief that it was a Buddhist monastery earlier, as Buddha's images are said to been excavated from this place.

Thalassery Fort: 22 kms from Kannur, the fort constructed in 1708,was the military centre of the British and is now a historical monument. The S.A.I. Gymnastic Centre, an old Muslim Mosque, the Jagannatha temple and the Thiruvangadi Sree Rama Swami temple are other.

Pazhazzi dam: 37 kms East of Kannur near Mattannur, the Pazhassi is an ideal retreat for tourists, the dam site is famous for its scenic beauty. The Buddha's mountain at Pazhassi and the sculpture of Pazhassi King are visual delights.

Pythal Mala (Hill Station): 65 kms from Kannur town, this enchanting hill station, situated 4,500 feet above sea level near the Kerala-Karnataka border, is rich in flora and fauna. It is a 6 km. trek to the top of the hills.
Alaram Wildlife Sanctuary: Alaram Wildlife Sanctuary is a situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats. Found in this tranquil sanctuary is elephants, sloth bears, sambar and mouse deer as well as fauna and reptiles. The highest peak of Katti Betta, covered with tropical and semi- evergreen forests rises to a majestic height of 1145 m above sea level.
