CHANDIGARH
Charming Chandigarh, the "City Beautiful" is a unique Union Territory of India as it is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana states. The city was conceived as the capital of Punjab after the partition of India and is the first planned modern city of India. Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of "Chandi Mandir" located in the vicinity of the site selected for the city.
The deity 'Chandi', the goddess of power and a fort of 'garh' lying beyond the temple gave the city its name "Chandigarh-The City Beautiful". Today, the city built from scratch has emerged as one of the finest places with all the advantages of a modern metro, but devoid of the problems like traffic jams, overcrowding, pollution, etc. it is also known for the high standards of living with highest per capita income in the country. The irresistible romantic city is endowed with splendid scenic beauty, lush landscape and clean invigorating environment.
PLACES OF ATTRACTION: 
ROCK GARDEN:
Chandigarh has the distinction of having a unique world acclaimed Rock Garden. It Consist of art object, fashioned from industrial and urban waste. It is situated between the capital complex and Sukhna lake in Sector1.It nestles amidst 20acres of woods in the form of an open air exhibition hall, theatre trove and a miniature maze all rolled into one vast fantasy land of art and landscape. It is without doubt, a tourist spot that is a must on the itinerary of visitor to Chandigarh. The creator of the rock garden, Nek Chand was a Road Inspector in the Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Capital Project. He roamed the Shivalik foothills and picked up stones resembling bird, animal, human and abstract forms. He brought them on his bicycle. The first seven years (1958-65) were spent collecting natural material, urban and industrial waste. Gradually his collection mounted to a staggering twenty thousand rock form of amazing beauty. These were deposited around a hut which he had built for his work and contemplation. He built the Rock Garden from this improvised hut which was located by the side of a stream.
ROSE GARDEN:
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden Asia's largest Rose Garden and is spreaded over 30 acres of land having over 1600 different species or roses. These have been planted beautifully carved out lawns and flowers beds. Like the cultural zone which is just across the road in sector 10,this was also planned by Dr. M.S. Randhawa as his interest in horticulture and fondness for flowers was profuse. Every year, either at the end of February or beginning of March, a big festival known as Rose Festival, is celebrated at this garden.
THE CAPITOL COMPLEX:
It is Le Corbusier's most spectacular work. The magnificent edifices, set against the Shivalik peaks, stand "as massive concrete sculptures, representing the monumental character authority that the complex represents. It is the seat of the government of the States of Punjab and Haryana. It comprises three epoch-making master-pieces: the Secretariat, the High Court and the Legislative Assembly. Separated by large piazzas, the subtle and most evocative grouping of these buildings is of breath-taking beauty. And in the centre stands the giant metallic sculpture of The Open Hand, the official emblem of Chandigarh, signifying the city's credo of 'open to give' open to receive'.
SUKHNA LAKE:
The beautiful lake covering an area of 3 sq. km. in the foothills of Shivalik range was built in 1958, by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivaliks. The charming water reservoir is considered to be the finest contributions of Le Corbusier and P.L.Verma, Chief Engineer of City. The lake has emerged as a popular site for tourists and picnickers. It provides water sport facilities like boating, water-skiing, canoeing, etc. and the 2 kilometer long promenade is favored by morning and evening walkers. Migratory birds like the Siberian duck, storks, and cranes can be seen here during winters and the site has been declared as a protected national wetland by Government of India.
SECTOR 17 PLAZA:
One of the most important places to visit is Sector 17, Chandigarh's sleek shopping area and the city centre. Planned around four pedestrian concourses meeting at a central chowk (intersection), the Sector 17 of Chandigarh is a pedestrian's paradise dotted with fountains, sculptures, and groves of trees. In summers the tourists move from one end of the sector to the other, under the shade of a corridor, and in winter it is nice to be out in the sun-drenched piazzas. In the evenings, when the colorful mosaic of neon signs and the aesthetically illuminated fountains come alive, Sector 17 becomes the Chandigarh city's biggest outdoor club.
TERRACED GARDEN:
A small valley running through the length of the sector has been developed into a Terraced Garden. Its main attraction is an illuminated musical fountain. The garden is the venue for the annual Chrysanthemum Show. It is spread over 10 acres and was opened in 1979.
INTERNATIONAL DOLLS MUSEUM:
Located in Sector 23, International Dolls Museum in Chandigarh, India is one of the best museums of our country. It houses splendid dolls and puppets gathered from all over the world. International Dolls Museum was established in the year 1985 by Chandigarh administration in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Chandigarh. It was set up for the purpose of entertaining the kids. It serves like an amusement park for children. In the Chandigarh International Dolls Museum, you can find about 250 different kinds of dolls collected from countries like Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Russia and Korea etc. An added attraction for children is the toy train.
MANSA DEVI TEMPLE:
Chandigarh Mansa Devi temple is a very famous shrine located at Panchkula, which is about 8 kms away from the city. This holy Siddh Peeth is dedicated to Mata Mansa Devi. According to the Hindu mythology, the head of Devi Sati had fallen over here. Mansa Devi Temple near Chandigarh basically houses two temples. The temple that is located near the parking lot is said to be the main temple. It was established in the year 1815 A.D by the ruler of Mani Majra.
