Ponnani: the only port in the district, this is an important fishing centre. During the months of February/April, thousands of migratory birds arrive here. Ponnani is Biyyan Kayal, a placid, green-fringed waterway with plenty of water sport facility. The 600 year old Jama Mosque is an important pilgrim centre of the Muslims of Kerala and has Ponnani the name, Mecca of the East.
Padinjarekkara Beach (5kms from Ponnani): famous for bird watching, the beach also offers a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Bharathpuzha, the Tirur Puzha and the Arabian Sea.
Thiruvanya (8kms south of Tirur): situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha, this place was once the venue of Mamangam, a great assembly of the rulers of Kerala, held once in every 12 years. The 6000 year old Thirunavaya Navamukunda temple here, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is known as the Kasi of the South.
Nilambur: this is the original home of the Cholainaickans, the oldest aboriginal tribe of Kerala. The extensively forested area is well known for Canoli’s Plot, the world’s oldest teak plantation and bamboo woods. Located here is the only teak museum in the world, which houses around 55 types of bamboo, arboretum, the biggest teak on earth and a butterfly park.
Kottakunnu: this fort located near the District Collectorate was the first to be built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode. Nearby is the Nilambur Kovilakam and the Vettakkorumakan Temple.
Venkatathevar Temple, Kottakkal: about 64 mural paintings adorn the walls of the sanctum sanctorum of this temple dedicated to Lord Siva.
Kumbham Handicraft Village: the Kumbharan community of the village who were traditionally artisans revived the dying craft of pottery through the Kumbham Handicraft initiative.
Adyanpara (15kms from Nilambur): located at Kurumbalangode Village, Adyanpara is famous for its waterfalls and lush jungles.
Nedumkayam Rain Forests: this is one of the most beautiful and dense forests in Kerala with a splendid variety of flora and fauna. An integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, this area is ideal for trekking.
Kottakkal (12kms South-West of Malappuram): this small town is home to the famed Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, one of the pioneer institutions of Ayurveda.
Vallikunnu Beach: a beach resort set in the midst of a coconut grove is the main attraction here. Close to it is the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.
Vakkad Beach: a pristine area, boatring in the estuary where the river flows into the sea through Vakkad Beach is a unique experience by itself.
Kootai (close to the Tirur Railway Station): locally known as Kanoli Canal, boating facilities that include Shikaras which resemble a gondola, platform boats and speedboats that travel upto Azhimugam, 19kms away.
